Setting the Scene

This assignment is a reflection on your BSc Nursing learning. To focus your thinking, you are required to select one NHS Value (Health Careers, 2024) from the four below, which has been particularly significant to your learning.

(Four out of the six NHS values have been identified as options for this reflection.)  

Context: NHS Values 

Patients, public, and staff have supported the development of this expression of values that have inspired passion in the NHS and that should underpin everything it does. Individual organisations will develop and build upon these values, tailoring them to their local needs. The NHS values provide a common ground for cooperation to achieve shared aspirations at all levels of the NHS. Four out of the six NHS values have been identified as options for this
reflection.

  • Working together for patients. Patients come first in everything we do. (This is the one I have chosen)
  1. Focusing on one NHS Value (Health Careers, 2024), you can choose to reflect primarily on your practice and how this has allowed you to develop an understanding of this value. 

I chose this value because I did my placements in an elderly nursing home, an adult dementia ward, and CAMHS.  Please use it to base my reflection.

You are advised to include an introduction. Keep this opening paragraph to just a few lines, which introduces your chosen NHS Value (Health Careers, 2024). Explain your use of Driscoll’s model (Driscoll, 2007) as a structured approach in your work. You may wish to add a statement here about confidentiality (NMC, 2018).  

What? (approx. 200-300 words) 

In this section, explain the NHS Value and your rationale for your choice. Include your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Provide a concise description of the key practice or learning experience, which is relevant to this NHS Value (Health Careers, 2024).  

This provides the context and should be the shortest section of your reflection.  

So What? (approx. 750-900 words) 

With your chosen NHS value (Health Careers, 2024), this is where you will critically reflect on your practice or learning experience identified in the ‘what’ section.  Using evidence to support your discussions.

Has your leadership contributed to effective teamwork in connection with your chosen NHS value? Consider how different approaches to collaborating in the interprofessional learning context may align with your chosen NHS value. Reflect on your nursing behaviours and values and how these have been impacted by your experience.

The ‘So What’ section may start as the shortest, but this should ultimately be the longest.  

Now What? (approx. 350-400 words) 

In this section, you will develop a specific plan from your analysis in the ‘So What’ section. The plan must show how your learning will inform the development of nursing behaviours and values in your practice. Consider how your leadership will contribute to effective teamwork and the different approaches to interprofessional collaboration, reflecting the NHS value. Use evidence to support your discussions.
