Professional Identity Reflection
What was your motivation to work in your field of study?
A key motive that propelled my choice to undertake a masters in nursing is a highly rooted desire to provide a value to patient care and health equity. I have been in different clinical environments where I have experienced the disparate nature of the systemic healthcare disparity in the vulnerable population. This finding led to the urge to transcend bedside care to an intervention in policy, education, and systems change. Particularly, I was motivated by nurse leaders who offer services directly to their patients and their interdisciplinary teams.
Their ability to infuse their compassion with strategic thinking taught me about the transformational ability of advanced nursing practice. This is the path that I chose to follow, as I also wanted to acquire the leadership skills that would allow me to resolve a complex healthcare problem and become a change agent of inclusive and high-quality care in various communities.
How do you define your professional identity? What are the core values, beliefs, and goals that guide your work?
As a nurse, my identity is founded on these four aspects of empathy, integrity, lifelong learning, and social justice. I believe everyone must be provided with the evidence-based practice associated with compassionate and culturally competent care. I view nursing as a calling as well as a profession that requires humility, critical thinking, and strength. Respect for human dignity and responsibility, as well as advocacy, are my primary values that govern my relations with patients, families, and colleagues.
I would aspire to be an effective team player who inspires others and also expects to continually expand my practice. The last professional goal is to lead initiatives to reduce health disparities and empower communities to receive accessible and equal care, which conforms to the study presented by Morales et al. (2023). This identity is built based on reflection, experience, readiness to listen and learn, and develop.
How do you think DEI influences your attitudes, beliefs, or actions as a professional?
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) form the basis of ethical and productive nursing practice. The embracing of DEI is something that can prompt me to reconsider my personal assumptions and biases, critique other assumptions, and approach each communication in a culturally responsible manner. It influences my ideology that equitable care is not merely one person being treated equally, but there is an acknowledgement and reaction to individual social, cultural, and historical conditions that constitute health outcomes.

DEI makes me aware that, as a professional, I can use my voice and raise awareness of the marginalized through advocacy work, care planning, and communication because of the aggressive actions of the healthcare systems, as aligned with the work of Marjadi et al. (2023). It also shapes the manner in which I collaborate with other individuals in the team to provide inclusive working environments in which the diversity of opinions is accommodated. Last, but not least, is a lens that I apply in practicing, leading, and learning, which is DEI.
What are some of the challenges or expectations that you anticipate in this program?
The other difficulties that I anticipate in this master’s program are my capacity to balance between the heavy academic and personal and professional demands. To an advanced academic role in clinical practice, discipline, time management, and tolerance of discomfort in the coursework process will be required in order to face the numerous complex theories and leadership concepts. Additionally, the deep self-reflection on the topic of DEI and leadership can help to disclose all prejudices or a lack of knowledge that I will have to overcome in the most sincere manner, which is noticed by the research of Davis et al. (2024).
I also expect the program to ensure that I challenge my assumptions about healthcare systems and my role in them, in addition to encouraging me to think more and be more confident in my actions. However, I do not consider those challenges a burden. The scaffold that I intend to utilize to be successful in the learning process is collaborative learning because I will learn with different people and with the faculty.
What are the personal, academic, or professional goals you hope to achieve through this program?
The program will enable me to be a transformational nurse leader with the ability to bring change within complex healthcare environments. On the academic side, I would improve on my research, policy analysis, and evidence-based practice skills. The career objective is to shift to a more interdisciplinary role that would incorporate both clinical care and systemic advocacy, either as a career in the area of public health nursing, policy development, or education and education which would enable me to influence the health disparity on a broader level.
Personally, I am at the point of deep interest in mastering my personal awareness, emotional capabilities, and my skill to endure hardship, both on ethical matters and managing profane groups as mentioned by the research by Rao et al. (2024). The other aspect I will optimize my commitment to DEI is to include inclusiveness in every area of my practice. Lastly, this program is a platform for the future of a caring, qualified, and fearless leader who will have a positive impact on patients and nursing in general.
