CHEM120 – Week 2 Discussion
Part 1: Atomic Structure and Morphine
In both healthcare and industry, countless molecules play crucial roles in improving human life. One particularly significant molecule is morphine (C17H19NO3), a potent narcotic used extensively for managing severe pain. Morphine exerts its effects primarily in the central nervous system, particularly the brain, by altering the perception and response to painful stimuli. This modulation allows patients to experience relief from otherwise debilitating pain.
Morphine can be administered in multiple forms, including oral tablets, capsules, and intravenous (IV) solutions. Chemically, morphine belongs to the class of opiate alkaloids, which are semi-synthetic compounds derived from naturally occurring substances. Being an organic molecule, morphine contains carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms arranged in a complex structure that contributes to its pharmacological activity (National Center for Biotechnology Information, 2020).
Part 2: Types of Compounds
Compounds can be broadly classified into ionic compounds, covalent compounds, and polyatomic ions, each distinguished by their bonding patterns, molecular structures, and characteristic examples.
Ionic Compounds
Ionic compounds form when a metal atom transfers one or more electrons to a nonmetal atom, creating positively and negatively charged ions. These oppositely charged ions attract each other, resulting in a stable crystalline lattice.
| Compound | Name |
|---|---|
| NaCl | Sodium chloride |
| MgO | Magnesium oxide |
Covalent Compounds
Covalent compounds arise when two or more nonmetal atoms share valence electrons. This electron sharing allows each atom to achieve a stable electron configuration, forming molecules with defined shapes and properties.
| Compound | Name |
|---|---|
| NH3 | Ammonia |
| H2O | Water |
Polyatomic Ions
Polyatomic ions consist of multiple atoms covalently bonded together, carrying an overall charge. These ions frequently combine with other elements or ions to form stable ionic compounds.
| Compound | Name |
|---|---|
| NaHCO3 | Sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking soda) |
